When luminaries from the Beary community had gathered on the second day of the World Beary convention organised by the Beary Cultural Forum, Dubai, a prominent non Beary personality stole the limelight all the way. It was none other than the reverend Shaik Abubakkar Ahmad or the more familiar A P Usthad. The reason for his presence over there and the kind of respect and admiration he received is rather simple. He is the one of the tallest figures in the line of Islamic scholars and social reformers among the present day Muslims in India. A large section of Mangalorean Muslims have always held him in such high esteem that every major religious and social gathering would crave for his luminous presence . No wonder he was accorded the much deserved red carpet welcome at the World Beary Meet.

Scores of eminent Islamic scholars have lived dearer to hearts of Muslims in India over the centuries, but very few have achieved the distinction that AP Usthad was able to achieve in a short span of time. In addition to being a highly revered and competent Islamic scholar of our times, he has been greatly acclaimed for his vision, leadership qualities in the field of Islamic and General Education, and social reforms among Muslims in India.

What do you say about the practice of dowry system among Muslims?

Usthad: Dowry system is a menace to the Islamic society. It must be eradicated. We have organized many campaigns against it and many more are planned in the coming years. Each year the outgoing students and Moulvis of the Markaz pledge against the dowry system and vow to work against the dowry system.
